The Story not Told
On 14th October 1939, HMS Royal Oak was torpedoed in the waters of Scapa Flow, Orkney, where she was thought to be in safe harbour. Of the 1400 crew, 833 men and boys lost their lives that night. Arthur Gibbs, my grandfather, was a survivor and just 22 years old at the time. He never spoke of his ordeal to his children or grandchildren.
This series of photos is based on extracts from a letter to his wife, describing his escape, written 6 years after the fateful night.
